I'm not sure what's so bad about this Wharf Rat?? I'm as avid a listener as everyone else here, and I'm not afraid to call the GD out on bad performances. But this isnt one of them. It's different, as far as the first part of the composition goes, but I dont think Garcia or the rest of the band got lost at any point. In fact, to the extent that it was an impromptu change in the rhythm by Garcia, I think the rest of the boys do an outstanding job adapting-- real pros. Makes me wonder how strange this music is that there is such a divided opinion with extreme views about one version of one song.

While we're obviously on different sides of this one, Pat, I will agree that it's a great example of some of the voodoo going on with the band's music in that we all listen to the same piece yet come away with such different opinions.

Agree completely. How many times has someone said "You've got to hear this show! It's the best ever!" and after you listen to it, you respond "Well, it's OK". This is especially true when the other person was at the show and you weren't. Definitely an "I was there" bias exists, but not always. Take me, for example. I was at the Phoenix 94 shows and came away thinking "Jerry has truly lost it and become a shadow of his former self", but if you read the reviews here of the shows, most are 4 stars or higher. Different people, different impressions. I think that is what is so great about this music, it is hits everyone on different levels, creating the wonderful and varied discussions we continue to this day.

also i believe a lot heads still are in denial over the fact that jerry's health was so bad at that time. some believe that it didn't have any affect on him and the music. it's just too damm obvious what was goin' on at these shows especially the 6-18 show. he was a complete mess and for those to say this sounds good is just not seeing the forest through the trees..and i was one of them ...

I too was at the '94 shows here and feel more or less the same way... Oh well, something is better nothing. As I recall there wasn't much on TV that weekend anyway...

Well, I guess the friend I made in the parking lot who had his own tank of nitrous in the back of his van helped make it pretty cool. As for the TV issue, you've got a good point. Beats a sharp stick in the eye.
